Global Grief Over Bhutto Assasination

Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in a gun and bomb attack after an election rally in Rawalpindi, near Islamabad.

The former Prime Minister of Pakistan (and the first female prime minister of any Islamic nation), Bhutto was a Pakistani politician who chaired the Pakistan Peoples Party and had spent the last decade in exile.

After only recently returning to Pakistan on October 18, 2007, she was killed entering her vehicle by two gunmen. Shortly following was the explosion of a suicide bomber in the crowds, taking the lives of 20 others.

She was laid to rest beside her father, a former prime minister of Pakistan aswell and who also was assasinated, in the family mausoleum.

Her husband, Asif Ali Zardari told crowds gathered at the funeral procession to “Show patience. Give us courage to bear this loss.”

Hilton Has A Heart

Barron Hilton, former CEO of Hilton Hotel Corp., will leave 97% of his fortune to charity.

$2.3 billion of his net worth is going to his father’s charity foundation: The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation.

His son Steven M. Hilton, who is president of the organization, had the following to say:

“Working to alleviate human suffering around the globe, regardless of race, religion or geography, is the mandate of the foundation set by my grandfather . . . .and now reinforced by my father.”

Guess Who’s Dreaming Of A Green Christmas?

Pope Benedict XVI reinforced the importance of protecting the environment during the traditional midnight mass Christmas ceremony.

Referring to an earlier father of the church, bishop Gregory of Nyssa, the pope asked:

“What would he say if he could see the state of the world today, through the abuse of energy and its selfish and reckless exploitation?”

Papa isn’t all preach either – apparently the Vatican has purchased carbon credits this season to offset emissions.

Xmas Comes Early For Real Madrid

Real Madrid beat its arch-rival Barcelona 1-0 at Camp Nou last night, taking hold of the Primera Liga title race and crushing Barcelona’s perfect home record this season.

It was Madrid’s second Spanish league win at the Nou Camp stadium in 24 years.

Julio Baptista scored the game’s winning (and only) goal in the first half.

Global sensation and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador,Shakira travelled to Bangladesh and met with women and children whose lives have been affected by Cyclone Sidr.

“I came to Bangladesh to see the impact of the cyclone and to learn about UNICEF’s approach to education,” said Shakira. “We visited a variety of education programmes and became even more convinced that education is a powerful tool to improve people’s lives.”

“By making a small investment in these children, we can give them the opportunity they deserve and we can build a better, safer world. I am impressed to see the difference UNICEF is making with education and life skills by reaching children with different needs,” Shakira said.

Queen Goes YouTube

It may not be Perez Hilton’s cup of tea these days, but one Queen is certainly digging the YouTube:

Queen Elizabeth II will use YouTube to send out her 50th televised annual Christmas message.

“The queen always keeps abreast with new ways of communicating with people,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement. “The Christmas message was podcast last year.”

“She has always been aware of reaching more people and adapting the communication to suit. This will make the Christmas message more accessible to younger people and those in other countries.”
